Greenhouse Activities- 1st Week of Spring

Some greenhouse helpers. Philip-Edouard, Francie, Andi & Gerry do some precision planting and transplanting. We were planting various greens, beets, broccoli, lettuce, and even a few radish for an early salad. This is only the tip of the iceberg as there are about 50 trays of onions, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, ground cherries, tomatillos, and leeks at home under the lights to be transferrred around Easter.

Getting ready for spring!

Feb 28- Micheal stacking wood in the greenhouse. The greenhouse is almost ready for planting with its new door and a cleanup. Once the snow melts a bit more, the new plastic can go on. Everything will be up and running by Mid March. Drop by sometime to plant a few seeds and have a cup of tea in the greenhouse!

Welcome to Jemseg River Farm Blog

Welcome to Jemseg River Farm's blog. We have a web site under construction, but we will be posting information here for now.

After much searching for the right piece of land, the farm was purchased in 2009 and a few acres acres have been prepared for vegetable production in 2010. We expect to be certified organic in early summer 2010.

Welcome to the Jemseg River Farm Blog! We will be growing a wide array of veggies again this summer and choose the tastiest varieties we can find. Twenty years of gardening experience has provide a long list of favourite varieties like mouthwatering heirloom Pruden's Purple tomatoes , Fairy Tale eggplants, Webb's Wonderful lettuce and Costata Romanesca zucchini.

We sell our produce primarily through our stall at Fredericton's Boyce Farmer's market on Saturday mornings.

The Farm

Jemseg River Farm is located on the Jemseg River close to where it meets the Saint John River. Along the south side of the property is the marshy Dykeman Lake, a haven for waterfowl, herons, eagles and osprey. The fields are mostly located on a plateau above the valley that afford some of the most beautiful views in the area. We are blessed with a great deal of biodiversity because we are within the Grand Lake Ecosytem and enjoy one of the most favourable microclimates in New Brunswick.

In the past, the Jemseg area and the farm were well known for the bountiful strawberry and vegetable crops. When we purchased the farm, with the exception of hay harvesting the farm fields had seen little activity over the past decade. The combination of microclimate and non-chemical history make this farm an ideal spot for organic vegetable farming.

The soils are continuously managed to improve the soil quality, incorporating organic matter and nutrients over time. Since organic matter is mostly CO2 we are stiving to attain a negative carbon footprint, that is to say we will sequester more carbon than we emit in our farming activities.
